How are the Smart Academy courses undertaken?
You can do most of our courses by distance education or in seminar courses. In distance education we’ll send you paper-based manuals to complete and return to us for assessment. If you prefer to arrange a group seminar course for your office or network, call us today to discuss your requirements.
How long will it take?
It is up to you how long you take to complete your CPD requirements but be mindful of the prescribed time requirements prior to your renewal date. For assistance and advice please call us or check the Office of Fair Trading website. In completing distance or seminar course work with Smart Academy you must return it to us for assessment before the renewal date for your Certificate or Licence.
How am I assessed?
There are assessment activities throughout our CPD training using competency based assessment strategies – that is, a determination is made of either ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’. On completing a topic return all your assessment activities to us for review and you’ll receive a Certificate of Achievement after being assessed as ‘competent’.
Remember, you’re required to keep a record of your training for a period of 3 years. Naturally, Smart Academy will also keep a record of this.

When do I have to complete my CPD training by?
Your CPD training must be completed by the renewal/anniversary date on your Certificate or Licence. Remember, it’s your responsibility to maintain current qualifications.
Am I able to accrue CPD points from one year to the next?
Not usually. For more details check the Commissioner’s Guidelines.
How many points do I have to complete each year?
ALL Licence and Certificate holders must complete 12 CPD points each year. Under changes announced by the Minister in February 2007 (to take effect from 1 April 2007) multiple Licence holders will only have to complete 12 CPD points in total, rather than the additional 3 points per Licence category previously required. This provides a simplified process for all, regardless of the number of Licences held.
What topics do I have to cover?
You must cover the Compulsory Topics as specified by the Office of Fair Trading in the Commissioner’s Guidelines. After completing the Compulsory Topics you can obtain the remainder of your points from the Priority Learning Areas specified in those Guidelines.

Remember, you must keep records of your CPD training for 3 years. We also keep records of all CPD training we conduct and you can access these anytime.
What records do I need to keep to prove I have my points?
Keeping a record of your training can be done in a variety of ways but we recommend you keep a summary on a tracking sheet and file your assessment activities and certificates together by year.
What happens if I haven’t completed my CPD requirements by my renewal/anniversary date?
To renew your Certificate or Licence you must complete the CPD conditions PRIOR to your anniversary date. If extenuating circumstances have prevented you completing the requirements by this time, you should contact the Office of Fair Trading.
Does in-house training count towards CPD?
Yes it does. Check the Commissioner’s Guidelines for more details. In-house training usually provides you with CPD points in learning category 1 which accumulate at the rate of half a point per hour of training. Of course this training must fulfill all the CPD conditions, including having a stated learning outcome. The Commissioner’s Guidelines specify that if any of your CPD training is from Learning Category 1, you must also have training from one of the other Categories.
Can I complete the same topic in 2 separate training sessions?
You can, but you can only count one lot of points. If you have already completed a topic under one of the learning categories you are deemed to have completed that topic.
